Ela Bahena is a costume designer working across theatre and film.
From 2016 to 2021, she studied Fashion Design in Mexico City. During her final year, she joined the costume team of the opera Motecuhzoma, directed by Samuel Maynez Champion, where she contributed to the development of historically accurate, handcrafted pieces in collaboration with historians and the National Museum of Anthropology.
Her graduation project explored the working conditions within the costume guild in Mexico City. Since then, she has assisted established costume designers such as Edyta Rzewuska and Sara Salomon, while also designing and coordinating costumes for emerging film production companies, including Pico Love and Teoría del Caos.
In 2023, she designed and coordinated costumes for the historical short film Sublevado, directed by Roberto Cortés, which was presented at several cultural venues and international short film festivals, including Shorts México.
Since 2024, she has been based in Berlin, where she gained her first experience within the theatre scene as an intern at the Deutsche Oper Berlin on the production immermeeehr, directed by Franziska Seeberg. In 2025, she continued to establish her practice within the independent theatre scene, designing costumes, hair, and make-up for you/me/alien, a musical theatre production by Operalab Berlin, directed by composer Evan Gardner.
